Precitec and AUDI are on the shortlist for the Photonics Frontiers Award 2026. In the “Industrial laser systems” category, both companies have been nominated as finalists for their innovative approach to AI-supported quality assurance in laser welding.

AUDI and Precitec among the finalists for the Photonics Frontiers Award 2026

The focus is on the Precitec Laser Welding Monitor (go to product) with machine learning and a photonic 3D fingerprint of each weld seam. The solution enables precise, sensor-based evaluation of welding quality and thus supports reliable process monitoring in industrial series production - especially in demanding applications such as battery module production for electromobility.

The inclusion in the final round recognizes the potential of the joint development by Precitec and AUDI: the combination of laser technology, photonics and artificial intelligence enables process deviations to be detected at an early stage, production processes to be made more transparent and quality assurance to be made significantly more efficient.

The Photonics Frontiers Award honors application-oriented photonics projects that offer concrete technological solutions for real industrial challenges. According to Electro Optics, the 2026 finalists demonstrate the range of current innovations - from industrial laser systems and quantum technologies to optical communication and metrology.
