Optical measurement technology for the aerospace industry

Precision, reliability and traceability are crucial requirements in the production of aerospace components. Aircraft engines and structural components are exposed to extreme thermal, mechanical and environmental stresses. To ensure long-term performance and safety, all coatings and critical variables must be strictly controlled throughout production.

Protective and functional coatings, surface treatments and complex geometries pose significant challenges for measurement and quality assurance. Conventional inspection methods often rely on sample parts, tactile techniques or late-stage production checks - methods that can limit process control and increase the risk of scrap or rework.

Precitec 3D Metrology supports aerospace manufacturers with advanced optical and photothermal solutions for reliable measurement. The technologies are designed for non-contact, high-precision inspection directly in the production environment. By enabling early process control, reliable thickness inspection and geometry-independent measurement, our sensors help to ensure consistent quality while improving efficiency and traceability.

Checking corrosion protection coatings

Conventional methods of layer thickness measurement are often inadequate to meet the requirements of the aerospace industry. Contact-based methods can damage sensitive surfaces, have difficulty with rough or complex geometries and provide inconsistent results - often requiring costly destructive testing.

The Enovasense Point Sensor (PS) enables early, non-destructive layer thickness measurement, supporting proactive quality control at the right time - before curing or densification. This effectively reduces rejects, rework and cycle times. By moving quality assurance to an earlier stage of the process, manufacturers can take corrective action while it is still cost effective.

Process monitoring of thermal spray coatings

Thermal spray coatings are indispensable in the production of aircraft engines. However, the rough and porous microstructure of this type of coating combined with the complex geometries of turbines make reliable measurements very challenging. Conventional quality inspection methods reach their limits here. This is why destructive cross-sections are often used for inspection, which interrupt the production process and only allow limited insight into the actual condition of the component.

The Enovasense Point Sensor (PS) enables non-contact and non-destructive layer thickness measurement directly on thermally sprayed aerospace components. The technology measures the thickness of coatings regardless of surface roughness, curvature or opacity. As a result, the sensor enables manufacturers to improve process stability and ensure reliable performance of turbine components.
